SUMMER MOVIE SERIES

To accompany our August worship series about Gardening, we are offering Friday night movies for your summer viewing pleasure.  Beat the heat in our cool sanctuary, and plan to stay afterwards for some discussion if you are interested. If you are so inclined, please bring a snack to share.

Friday, August 10th 6:30 pm

Greenfingers: Jailbuds (2000) R

It's one big (green) thumbs-up for this affecting true-life tale about hardened con Colin Briggs (Clive Owen), a small-time criminal who gets a new lease on life -- behind prison bars -- as an award-winning gardener. Standing out in supporting roles are David Kelly as a prisoner chum of Briggs's who coaxes him out of his shell and Helen Mirren as a world-class horticulturalist who worries when her daughter falls for Briggs.

Genre: Comedies, British Movies, British Comedies

This movie is: Emotional, Quirky, Feel-good

Friday, August 17th 6:30 pm

Being There (1979) PG

In director Hal Ashby's Oscar-winning satire, illiterate gardener Chance (Peter Sellers) is run over by wealthy Eve (Shirley MacLaine) and suddenly becomes educated gent Chauncey Gardiner, thanks to Eve's misunderstanding of his mumbled introduction. Taken in by Eve's family, Chance simply regurgitates what he's heard on TV -- from gardening instructions to economic predictions -- and Washington's political elite hail him as their next star.

Genre:  Comedies, Political Comedies, Satires

This movie is: Cerebral, Quirky, Understated

The Milagro Beanfield War (1988) R

Based on John Nichol's book set in a tiny New Mexican town, Robert Redford's comedy-drama pits the little guys against big development. When a local resort owner wants to expand, farmer Joe (Chick Vennera) takes a stand. The eccentric locals divide on the issue, but organized action mixed with a little magic unites them to fight for their rights. John Heard, Christopher Walken, Sonia Braga, Ruben Blades, Daniel Stern and Melanie Griffith costar.

Genre:  Dramas, Dramas based on Books, Dramas based on contemporary literature

This movie is: Quirky, Feel-good
