Activities for Adults

Adult Education

On many Sundays, at 11:30 (after Worship Service), adults can attend a discussion group we call Diving Deeper, to process further the themes presented during worship. This allows everyone to participate in Fellowship in Bond Hall from 11:00 to 11:30 am. When Diving Deeper is held, the Children Gathering and Nursery Care continue until Diving Deeper concludes so that parents can participate in the discussions.

Book Discussion Groups

Typically, there is at least one book discussion group on-going at the church. These groups are created by participants based on their interests and current events, so the topics vary. Here are some examples:

      • Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart

This book was written by McClaren, and seemed very appropriate for the present societal state. It looks at how we can approach apocolypse-like issues from a philosophical and theological point of view.

      • Banned Book Club:

We select from lists of banned books and discuss them in light of our progressive viewpoints.

      • White Privilege Awareness

Starting with a UCC curriculum, we discussed several books dealing with White Privilege including The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson, How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi, The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border by Francisco Cantú.

Dinner Groups (also known as Bon Apetit Groups)

Throughout the year, small groups get together for potluck dinners at each other's homes to build community. Many people say that the Bon Appetit Groups are one of their favorite ways to stay connected and form deeper relationships! It's a great way to spend social time together, enjoy good food and to really get to know each other better.

The Bon Appetit program creates social groups of six to eight people who arrange several potluck dinners at each other’s homes during a four-month round. One round begins in January and the other in September.
